I think lionel is the same fellow that lived in oakwood st, carters green, and repaired shoes as his main living.

I I was under the impression he only sold newspapers as a living I don't think he had the time for now't else, every time you was up the Town he was there, no matter what time you was up there, he was there !!
I am sure his brother was a boxer and lived around the Hargate Lane area ?? (I may be wrong)

I remember Lionel at Dartmouth Square when I was a little kid,I was scared to death of him. He'd grab your hand when you gave him the money and wouldn't let you go until you were sreaming the place down.I could image that today ,he'd probably be reported by some dogooder. My mother came out of Claypit Lane and knew the Peel family and she thinks they may have had a shop selling faggots in Hargate Lane.

Cap on, fag out the end of his mouth, puffing & panting as he pulled on those handles, he looked a bit like that little one out of the Crankies (Are they still going there?), put him and mad julie together and you would have a great combination !

I'm trying to think of the name of the other character who used to frequent the High Street. I know his first name was , always known as Sammy, and I believe he lived in Bilhay Street.

That's the chap. I nearly arrested him myself on one occasion. In fact I think most of West Bromwich Police had dealings with him. I recall on one occasion he was making a nuisance of himself near Dartmouth Square, trying to get people to buy reels of cotton!
