As a child I lived in King Street, off Guns Lane. Does anyone have any memories of the poeple who lved their at that time.

Or do they have any stories of King Street at that time. I remember Samuel Whitehouse the coal merchant and there was one house in the street turned into a shop, I believe the lady who owned it was known as Amy ?

I also remember the Adams family who would go out with their horse and cart selling firewood.

Would like to hear from anyone who has anymore  history of  the street and surrounding area, how did King Street get it's name ?

Many thanks

According to the 1901 census my Grandfather (then 11) lived at No.34 with his mother Julia  and 3 sisters.  I couldn't find it on my late 60s early 70s A-Z so did a search for St. Andrew's Parish and found out it was near Carter's Green.  A quick look at my 1902 West Brom map located it immediately.  It seems it became the Guns Lane end of Bridge Street when they further developed that area, although I don't know when that was exactly.

My grandfather was Samuel Bridgewater, on his death certificate dated 13th October 1955, his address is given as 20 King Street, West Bromwich. Aged 56. Sadly, there are no surviving family members who could help with more info. Reading Alan's post about the shop owner, the person who registered my Grandfather's death was his sister, her name was Amy Ashcroft, married to Joseph in 1920, they had a son Joseph in 1921. A long-shot on the shop owner perhaps, would Amy have been a common name back then?.

Hello Mike,

Thanks for your post, the Amy Ashcroft you mention may well have been the Amy that had the shop, I can't recall any other person in the street with the name of Amy.

Hi Stephen.

A belated reply to your comments on King Street and that your Grandfather lived at No 34. My Grandparents lived next door to the Williams family, the houses were back to back.

I lived at 42 or 44 King Street, so the houses were close together, and I remember the Williams family well even though I was quite young at the time. I do recall that there were a number of Sisters.

Many thanks for reviving old memories.
