Right opposite the clock, I am not sure if it was next door to the Civic, but it was there abouts
I was born in Dudley St and I remember that newsagent as if it was yesterday, but can't for the life of me remember the name !
We used to get on the coaches to go to the Albion Away games outside the shop and I can remember it being decked out in Blue & White for the 68 final
Someone put an old man out of his misery and tell me the name of it !!!

Would that be the Cafe about 6 doors away from the Marksman
We used to get fed there every morning after our works canteen closed at Guests.
I`ll make some enquiries about the name of the newsagents name.

I contacted an old workmate who lives in Dudley St about 4 houses down from the Church and he reckons it was last called Bernards and that man was there for years with his wife till he retired. Probably not he same man you are thinking of.
I have asked someone else via e.mail who is a long standing trader on the Green so we`ll see what he comes up with.

My second source tells me the people that ran the shop were Bernard and Doreen Adams and they had it for 30 years plus. Prior to that it was run by a man named Stevens

ADAMS !!!!!!! That was the one, Thanks Chris !! I am sure they had a son ? I remember that shop as if it was yesterday, the shop was only small but crammed full and it even had stuff hanging from the ceiling and it also had a big step up to go to the back of the shop.
I know which cafe you are on about Chris, it wasn't that one. The Tower Restaurant (Civic) was further on down towards the clock, just down from where the Fine Fare once stood, by the Post Office.
To me it was a large building and all of the busmen and coach drivers from that coach firm on the Green went in there for dinner, I remember there used to be a big blue (?) clock by the bus stops where the drivers used to have to clock in and out of, and I am sure there was a Police box, similr to Dr Who Tardis ?
Adams !, I would never have got that, it was eating away at me all night

I am delighted to say that Doreen Adams has been in touch. Doreen & Bernard ran the Newsagents shop, next to Sue the Hairdresser for 32 years and retired about 15 years ago, both are doing well, apart from Bernard's knees (All that standing behind the counter ! ) and living in Dudley Doreen & Bernard brought up 3 children at the shop and they still remember a lot of people who used to live around there and in fact one of their sons, Nigel is good friends with my cousin and they saw each other last weekend !! Small world ! Paul

Hi all.. I am Doreen and Bernards eldest Granddaughter (26), Im their eldest son Gary's daughter. I was the only grandchild for 7 years then the other 6 Grandkids came along. I just want to say how lovely it is how nan and grandad are remembered. They were very popular on the Green, everyone seemed to know them and had great respect for them. I have very fond memories as a little kid at the shop, I find myself talking about it a lot and boring my boyfriend to death. I loved spending every weekend there helping, filling up the sweets, cards and doing the displays in the window. Maybe some people remember me? It was hard graft for both nan and grandad running the shop for so many years, Grandad only having christmas day off... but they have very good memories and had lovely regular customers (as me and nan say..the good ole days). Since retiring they have both had their health issues which they both certainly don't deserve, but they are ok and their children and grandkids are keeping them on their toes
