Does anyone know where Lodge Nursing Home was in West Bromwich, I was born there in 1949.

I made a short visit to West Bromwich a couple of weeks ago first time in over 40 years. The High Street has changed a bit.

The old 'District Hospital' was close by, would it have been part of that?

Hello Essa.

WB library sent me a map showing a building on Lodge Road which was part of the hospital site, it still exists no 48 Lodge Road now part of Edward Street Hospital.

I thought that as the building in Lodge Road was part of the hospital site the place of birth on the birth certificate would read District General Hospital not Lodge Nursing Home yet there is no other building in Lodge Road that would have been suitable as a nursing home.

The Register office tell me that there were 2 nursing homes given as place of birth in 1949 one being Lodge Nursing Home the other being Park House Nursing Home, this is right at the begining of the Health Service which had started 6 months previously but could not help me with the location. Lodge Road would seem the logical location though any property called the Lodge could have been a nursing home.

I am sure that the nursing home maternity was on the corner of Lodge Rd and Edward St or perhaps is was a couple of doors down, when we went back to West Brom a few years ago there was still a largish, hospital looking building there

Is this the building you remember:

Next to that building is a car park on the corner, adjacent to the Unitarian church in Lodge Rd.  Presumably there would have been some sort of building there at some time.

Stephen the picture you show was called the Masonic Hall on the 1938 map.

The building on the corner of Lodge Road / Richard Street was part of the public baths now a car park.

The building on Lodge Road which is part of the hospital site is directly opposite Grange Road.

Hi Pat,

I didn't know that was the Masonic Hall.  That's interesting.  With regard to the building opposite Grange Road, I think I know to what you refer,  I think the link below will just show the extreme left of that part of the hospital site, next to the Unitarian Church.

Hello Steve

The  picture of the church in Lodge Road does show the corner of the building that might have been Lodge Nursing home to the right of it..

The space between the Masonic Lodge and Church on the corner of Lodge Road / Edward Street which is now a car park for the hospital is fairly open on the 1938 map but for 2 small buildings no bigger than a large and small shed so the corner is ruled out as the site of the nursing home.

If you search "masons west bromwich" on the internet  the picture of the Edward Street building is on the Masonic Hall West Bromwich ltd website.

I did that Pat as soon as I read your first post.  I had no idea the building was used for that purpose and have amended my photo details accordingly.  Thanks once again.
