I have been asked a question on my web site www.westbromwichalbionhistory.co.uk regarding Albion players using the Merry Go Round in Garrett Street in the early eighties.

I used to live around the corner from the Merry Go Round around this time but I can honestly say that I never heard of any Albion players using the pub.

I know they certainly used the Four in Hand on All Saints Way.

Does anyone remember any Albion players using the Merry Go Round, or for that matter anyone possibly using the Merry Go Round at all.

Although I lived in Clive Street at the time, just around the corner from it I very rarely used it, I always made my way to my preferred pub “The Old Crown” in Sandwell Road and The Labour Club on a Saturday night, but that’s another story.

Merry go round was the preferred pub for the lads from the YMCA and their friends of which I was one in the late 60's and 70's.

I had my 21st birthday in there and met my husband  in there on New Years Day 1973. He had his stag do in there in 1975.

I do not recall any Albion Players although we stopped going in around 1980ish when most of our mates had moved on.

It used to be packed out in those days and i seem to recall had a pretty good jukebox. Barmaid was called Mary?

Regis and Statham were in the Marksman every dinnertime after training eating Sausage sarnies and playing pool, we used to play against them on our dinner hour from Guests, Gary Robson was with them sometimes as well.

Although we never used the Merry, my wifes brother Ray Flowers and his wife Jean  used it....

They were related to Ron Flowers the Wolves goalkeeper.

Ray was football mad and my wife says he was taken on the books of a Scottish club in his youth..

He ran a number of teams playing on the Jesson in later years.

Does this spark any memories ?

Asa Hartford & Len Cantello used to lodge with an old lady in Sandfield Rd, Stone Cross when they were apprentices and Asa was still there when in full flow in the Senior side if I remember correctly.
