I am trying to research my Grandfathers service record, ( I did say that family history goes on and on! ) I tried Ancestry .com, without any success. I have been told that WW1 army records are freely available, but where? He was Samuel Freeman born 1896 Tipton He was gassed at Ypres in 1917 and never fully recovered, he died in 1937 I am sure others have succesfully traced their grandparents so any help would be great.. Essa.

I research WW1 War memorials and have found a lot of service records on Ancestry.co.uk although you need to register to see them. Also try the regiment he was in (if you know), a lot have details on their websites or you can ask them for help.

Hi Barbera. Thanks for your help, all I have to search with is his name, date of birth and death. I am registered with Anc'.com, most of my family research is from their website. But I have drawn a blank with their WW1 records.. I know that a lot of WW1 death records were destroyed by fires during the London blitz.. Because he survived the war his records were kept somewhere else, so they should be available....? I believe you can search at the National Archives but this means travelling to London, without any guarantee of success.. Can you recomend any other websites? Regards Essa..

You can try MOD enquiries Northolt see if they have them but will have to possibly pay and prove your identity as less than 100 years old. Otherwise need to find regiment he served in, Newspapers at time may be useful as they tended to put a lot of about local soldiers in them.

Unfortunately the CWGC is for soldiers with War Graves and as this gentlemen died in 1937 it is very doubtful he would have one

That's correct Barbara. Have you any idea where copies of local papers from that period would be available to search? Would Smethwick Archives or the library at West Brom' have any old ones? Also, what local papers were published during the period of 1914--1937, would it have been The Evening Despatch?? Essa..

Best bet is Smethwick Archives They have a lot of old newspapers but as it was Tipton would also suggest Dudley Archives as Tipton has changed sides a bit! Express and Star was around I believe also Chronicle and Dudley Herald
