After weeks of trouble with my Web Provider, I can now carry on and place new Photos onto the Home Page. Most of us can associate with the Sandwell Centre, Queens Square Photos, just added and am I right when that fountain looked like the water was going UP the strands ? I have added some cracking Photos donated by Richard Perry, he used to live in Bromford Lane and he has provided some great memories. Paul

Those new photos are superb. The ones originating from Richard strike a particular chord with me as it was my old stamping ground. My Aunt and Uncle lived a few doors from Richard so I know the 'Opening' very well. At the time the Sandwell Centre opened I was in the West Mids. Police (prior to a complete career change). I recall Chelsea Girl very clearly. The Manageress at the time was a very attractive young lady and at least a couple of Officers were very much attracted to her. On more than one occasion during the late evening, I know that the window of the shop was thumped in order to set off the trembler alarm. As she was the keyholder, it proved an opportunity to get to know her better! When the centre first opened there was a Police presence 24 hours a day. One could spend an entire shift in their, dying of boredom, especially when on nights. Various escapades took place to try and break the monotony during the night shift!

More Photos just added. I always have trouble with "Dudley road West Bromwich" but I am sure that's the Sow & Pigs Pub ? Who remembers the Horace the Boatman at Dartmouth Park....I certainly do, he used to frighten me half to death !

I cannot find a Dudley Road in West Bromwich on any of the old maps although Hill Top certainly had a Tram Way and it does look like the Sow and Pigs, Would it be Dudley Street, that had a Tram Way as well alhough I thought both roads are steeper. The wall on the left could be the old YMCA which had a large wall and drive in the front or the front of the church (was it built then) and the pub opposite could be the Nags Head. There is a terrace of house still there

To my mind that is definately Dudley St Carters Green end. The trees on the left are were St Andrews church is now then Jervoise st . The pup is the Nags Head the trees beyond it where later two shops. Farther on are the shop either side of Red Cow yard and the the Corner wine stores on the corner of Billhay St, Regards J.E.M.

I would agree with j.e.m. The row of houses on the left are still in situ.

It's definitely the Nags Head - I used to be sent there when I was about 6 years old (c1965) to tell my Grandad to come home for his dinner! We lived in Hayes Street at the other end of Cordley Street to the Nags Head. Proof of the photo's location can be found by looking at the photo of Peplows near the bottom of this page... http://www.west-bromwich-photos.co.uk/morephotos.htm Notice the first floor bay window and the pale curved stone atop the doorway at extreme right (the other doorway was incorporated in the later shop front i.e. one (corner) shop became two).
