can anyone remember a passageway at the side of Burtons.  When i was a small girl my mom and dad took me with them to a social club up there on the right hand side and the owners had a daughter called Glenis (i think) who was about the same age as me.  No one i speak to seems to remember it, im pretty sure it was up there.

It is still there between  'Cash Generator' and the YMCA Charity Shop or whatever it's called I always thought it was a Snooker Club up stairs When Spencers Market was open you could see the doorway to the alley which was also used as a back door to the Market.

that social club was the Oriental Tube Works social club Barbara, opposite in the alley was the entrance to thr Savoy Snooker room, outside that entrance was usually parked Teddy Melia,s fruit and vegetable cart.Teddy was a well known local identity.,never heard of a dance hall up there.

Loveday is right, it's Scotland Passage and it's still there.

There was a snooker hall above Burtons that may well have been a Dance Hall and I remember going there quite often and I will never forget the one armed Asian man who used to play there and no one could beat him !

It was indeed The Oriental Tube social club, many happy saturday nights were spent there with a bag of crisps and a bottle of Vimto when I was about ten years old.....in the late fifties.

Now let me get my head around this one armed snooker player....!!!!!

i worked at the Oriental in the early 50,s Terry, went to the club every Saturday night,it was handy for us,the No. 11 bus stopped almost right outside, took us to our home in Vicarage Road, they were good nights,it wasnt very elegant but we were younger then and it didnt take much to make us happy.
