I remember Beale St, your right it was where you said, but i am sure it was Hargate Lane as i dont remember a Street of that name. My brothers mate lived in the street, Jimmy Williams, they were houses with big party yards. Opposite the Street in Sandwell Rd was a field where Grants  Bakery used to keep their horses.

I remember Hargate Street, it was approximately opposite Bernard Street and was about 12 terraced houses, leading to an enclosed yard which was used as a football pitch by the local lads. It was demolishes early '60,s about the same time as Beale St, which ran to the junction of Sandwell Road/Hargate Lane. I think Montgomery Walk is  where Hargate St was situated.

My Aunty Amy Jay lived in Bernard Street number 10 and another relation of mine through marriage had the Car trimmers shop right up the corner on the nasty bend named Les Jones.  I know this is not about Bernard St but still !

Can someone put my mind at rest. Reading these posts about Hargate Lane, I attended the Tech in Hardware Street from 1965. In 1967 when me and my family moved to Wood Lane I remember walking to school up Wood Lane, down Dartmouth Street, across into Sandwell Road, past Rothwells Pickles into Hargate Lane past the council yard and into the rear entrance of the Tech. If you look at an A to Z of today Hargate Lane looks a fair distance from Hardware Street. Am I correct with regards to the walk I used to take, is the A to Z distorted, or am I losing the plot?

Bryn,

Did you pass to the left or right of the Council depot. If the depot was on your left, then you remained in Sandwell Road, and this would take you towards Hardware Street according to my early 70s A-Z, as Sandwell Road curved sharply to the right at junction with Hargate Lane.  This is probably less obvious today with the new dual carriageway and island.

Hi Steve

You're perfectly right, on closer inspection of the A to Z I can see that Sandwell Road did bend sharply to the right. That would have been the route I would have took so making the journey much shorter than I thought. Thanks for the reply!
