Fury as fountain attacked by yobs

Vandals have damaged a £35,000 replica drinking fountain unveiled in an historic Black Country park just months ago.

The sandstone fountain in Dartmouth Park, West Bromwich, was unveiled in a special ceremony in March, as a replica of one donated by the fifth Earl of Dartmouth when the park opened in 1878.

Yobs have now kicked off its centrepiece urn and smashed the drinking bowl, including the brass fittings, as well as the step beneath. Stonework and taps on the feature have also been damaged.

It is believed vandals were trying to reach copper piping feeding the fountain. The attack, believed to have taken place on Monday night, between 8 and 8.30pm and has been widely condemned.

Carol Harthill, secretary of the Friends of Dartmouth Park, said: “We are devastated by what has happened to our replica Victorian drinks fountain, and cannot believe there are people around who could do this sort of damage. It is a tragedy for all the people who love our beautiful park.”

Anyone with information is urged to call police on 0345 113 5000.

Sad to say, but if Carol Harhill really cannot believe that there are people who would do such damage, she is very naive.  Sadly, also, if they are caught, they won't be publicly flogged in the centre of town.
