Hello, this is my first posting - what a great site!!.  I just stumbled into by accident.

Can anyone tell me the day and date of the 1954 FA Cup Homecoming Parade?  I was there but was only 5 years old and need to find out to settle a dispute.

AHH !!!

A lot of people think the parade was held on the following day, on the Sunday but I am certain that it was the following week

There is something buried at the back of my mind that there was a reason why they didn't have it on the Sunday but I am 99.9 % certain it was the following week

There is a lady who comes on here every now and then who has something to do with the history of the Town Hall, I think it's Anne (?), she should be able to pinpoint or find out the date and there is John also who is into the Albion history and he has a website

Now, why wasn't it on the Sunday, this will bug me all day now !

First of all welcome to the site Grammar Grub !

I was always under the impression that the victory parade was the very next day, but I think this time was different ??

Like Michael, there is something in my mind telling me there was a reason why this wasn't the next day, I may be wrong, but I have done a bit of digging and I have come up with this quote from this site I found...

"This was followed by the traditional parade by coach to the West Brom town hall the following week where our fans lined the route, to greet our hero's back in style."

Here is the link (shame the pictures don't come in !)

Thanks for your trouble, Paul.  It would have to be a time of the week when people weren't working, wouldn't it?  So would it have been the following Saturday or Sunday?

As far as I can find out the victory parade was put back till the following Sunday as there was going to be a Train strike which had been arranged the following day after the Cup Final on 1st May. I do not know if the strike took place but the police and authorities thought it would be better for all concerned to move it to Sunday 9th May.

Yes , John is spot on.

I don't think the strike went ahead on the 2nd May but with the talk of it all they had to make arrangments for the following Sunday

We got up early here in Wellington to watch the England match on Thursday (Wednesday your time) and there was talk about a rail strike then, Nothing has changed there then !

Sorry to throw the spanner in the works here but I have just seen those new clips just added and the date of the 1954 homecoming film is Thursday 6/5/1954 and I reckon that date was when it hit the news reels at the cinemas, so I would say the homecoming was on the Wednesday 5/5/1954

Hello Michael, Yes I did notice the date and spoke to John, who has the West Bromwich Albion history website and he said the same as you, that the date on the film was the date of release so now we are none the wiser, was the homecoming on the Sunday or the Wednesday ?

Because of that date on the clip we now know that it wasn't on the Sunday the following week
